The best Bechamel sauce recipe is made with just a few ingredients. It is a basic white sauce used in cooking in many dishes all over the world. Here is the recipe! It is so easy that you can learn it by heart quickly. Use it in sauces, gratins, soups etc.
Thick Bechamel Sauce:
A thick white sauce is used in several Greek recipes. This thick sauce is used in for example my Greek Vegetarian Moussaka Recipe. You can easily double or triple the recipe. This recipe yields 1 cup.
Ingredients:
- 3 tbs. butter
- 3 tbs. all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk (any type).
- ¼ tsp. Salt (or to taste)
- ¼ tsp. White pepper (or to taste)
- Sprinkle of Nutmeg
Cooking Instructions:
In a saucepan melt 3 Tbs. butter.
Add 3Tbs. Flour, and whisk with a balloon whisk. Let it bubble gently for about 3 min. while whisking. Add 1 cup of milk a little at a time while whisking. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and let cook while stirring for another couple of minutes. Take care not to burn in the bottom of the pan! Season with salt, white pepper and nutmeg.
Thin Bechamel Sauce:
A basic white sauce is extremely versatile and is used in many different recipes. You can for example add the Bechamel to sauteed mushrooms for a creamy mushroom sauce. Or add some grated cheese for a cheese sauce; tastes great with for example steamed Broccoli! This white sauce recipe is great for Vegetarian Lasagna. Instead of salt you can add 2 Tbs of soy sauce and make a brown sauce.
Ingredients:
- 2 tbs. Butter
- 2 tbs. All purpose flour
- 1 cup milk.
- Salt, white pepper and nutmeg to taste.
Follow the same cooking instructions as above.
