It can be quite straightforward to grow mushrooms if you have a good understanding of the steps involved in the process, and you should not find it difficult to learn what this involves. It is important to note that while the basics of preparing growth medium and containers has been covered elsewhere, the actual basics of planting and taking care of mushrooms will be covered in this article in detail.
When you first get started with mushroom growing, you may buy mushroom spores or spawns before you learn how to harvest the mushroom caps for your own spores and spawns.
This spawn is also available in two types, flakes and bricks. The way you plant the spawn or spores depends on the type of mushroom that you buy. If you’re going to plant mushrooms regularly, it’s best to plant both types, and then track which ones work best for your own needs.
If you want to plant both types, you need to follow different planting methods. You will need to break the bricks into chunks of approximately one inch in diameter to plant them. This chunk is then placed into the growing medium, spaced about half a foot from each other. Before you place these chunks, you need to make a hole about one or two inches deep. The flakes are mixed directly into the growth medium. Cover approximately fifteen square feet of the growth medium with about a quart of these small flake and continue spreading until it is evenly covered. This mixture needs to be mixed into the growth medium while you do this.
The next step is the same whether the flakes are shown on the surface of the growth medium or the chunks. Only the flakes need to be visible on the surface of the growth medium. A mist of water is sprayed regularly on the mixture, and it must be kept in the dark. There will be mycelia flitting out from the mushroom spawn soon, which are synonymous with roots in fungus. It is after these are out that the mushrooms will really start to grow. They will, in fact, develop an intricate web of delicate pale white mycelia by the time they are fully grown.
A slight increase in temperature to about sixty-five degrees Fahrenheit in this time will result in an increase in growth. Don’t forget to water every day. In a few weeks you should be able to see the mushrooms growing. During the period between when the mushrooms appear and the time when they are harvested, you should avoid watering them. Mushrooms can be harvested either when they are very small, or when they have reached maturity. You only need to harvest the mature mushrooms with a sharp knife, and a new one will grow in their place shortly after harvesting.
